Baby Loss Awareness Week Stillbirth Awareness Stillbirth Prevention

Baby Loss Awareness Week

Kicks Count are honoured to be supporting Baby Loss Awareness Week 2016. 9th-15th October is dedicated to those who have been touched by the loss of a baby during pregnancy, birth or after birth. Bereaved parents, their family and friends can unite to commemorate the all-to-brief lives of their babies. The week is also vital for breaking the silence that still surrounds baby loss and more awareness of these tragedies can be raised.

Why do we support Baby Loss Awareness Week?

Too many people experience the devastation of losing their baby. At Kicks Count we are working hard to reduce the amount of preventable stillbirth in the UK with education and awareness of baby movements during pregnancy – 2 out of 3 mum’s who experience a stillbirth say that they noticed a reduction in their baby’s movements. In 2014, one in every 219 births was a stillbirth, this is around 10 babies every day. This number is far too high.  Despite this, baby loss remains a taboo subject and parents who lose their baby deserve to be able to talk about their experience and feel validated as parents. Baby Loss Awareness Week starts vital conversations and helps break the silence. Here you can find more information, including the other amazing organisations involved:

The pink and blue ribbon is the official Baby Loss Awareness Week pin badge and we have them available from our shop, though numbers are now limited.  By buying and wearing a badge, you’ll be helping to raise awareness one ribbon at a time, as well as supporting us to continue ensuring all mums in the UK know the importance of monitoring their precious baby’s movements.

Wave of Light

Baby Loss Awareness Week finishes each year on October 15 with the global ‘Wave of Light’. October 15 is also International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day and is recognised across the world. We would like to invite you to join with other families across the world and take part in the global ‘Wave of Light’. Simply light a candle at 7pm and leave it burning for at least 1 hour to join us in remembering all babies that have died too soon. This can be done individually or in a group, at home or in a communal space. Wherever you do this, you will be joining a global ‘Wave of Light’ in memory of all the babies who lit up our lives for such a short time.

This year we’re also inviting you to join a digital Wave of Light at 7pm on October 15. To be part of this take a photo of your candle and post it to Facebook or Twitter using #WaveOfLight at 7pm.

We have a limited number of Exclusive Wave of Light Candle Tins available to purchase, should you wish to use one on the night.
