The latest list of the UK's most popular baby names has been released and Oliver and Olivia have kept their top spots.

“Oliver and Olivia remained the most popular baby names in 2018, although there are the first signs that Oliver’s six-year reign as the number one name for boys is under threat," Nick Stripe, Office for National Statistics statistician, said.

"Arthur surged into the top 10 boys’ names for the first time since the 1920s, and Ada jumped into the girls’ top 100 for the first time in a century too, both perhaps inspired by characters in the BBC TV drama Peaky Blinders."

Less than half (45%) of babies had a name within the top 100 lists in 2018, down from two thirds (67%) in 1996, indicating that people are becoming more individualistic with the names they're choosing.

More than 60,000 different baby names are registered every year, about twice as many as twenty years ago.

Mr Stripe added: "The influence of popular and celebrity culture has grown and grown. Names once considered old fashioned have made a remarkable comeback, particularly those linked to TV shows such as Downton Abbey or Peaky Blinders. Previously unusual names from TV and film, such as Aria or Arya (Game of Thrones) and Luna (Harry Potter), have taken off. The influence of the names of our favourite actors, characters, musicians and sports stars can be seen sprinkled throughout the lists."
