Many mums-to-be experience swelling during pregnancy - and that includes celebrities!

The 38-year-old "I Wanna Love You Forever" singer reached out to her fans on Instagram this morning, asking for help to ease her painful pregnancy swelling. She captioned her photo: “Any remedies?! Help!!!!” which prompted a number of followers to share their experiences and tips.

According to the NHS, swelling is caused by your body holding more water than usual when you're pregnant and it's normal to get some swelling, particularly in your legs, ankles, feet and fingers.

If it comes on gradually, it's usually not harmful, although very uncomfortable. If the swelling is sudden, particularly if it’s in your face as well as your feet/hands, then you should call the midwife or maternity unit so they can check you don't have pre-eclampsia.

If you are experiencing swelling, try these tips:

  • avoid standing for long periods
  • wear comfortable shoes and socks – avoid tight straps or anything that might pinch if your feet swell
  • try to rest with your feet up as much as you can
  • drink plenty of water – this helps your body get rid of excess water
  • exercise – try to take regular walks during the day or doing foot exercises

Simpson announced that she is expecting her third child, a girl, in September. She already shares her daughter Maxwell, 6, and son Ace, 5, with husband Eric Johnson.
